Preliminary scope of work |
Preliminary scope of work in English |
The spread of invasive plants is one of the main factors threatening biodiversity both globally and locally. Many studies explain the success of invasive plants by their traits (e.g. propagule counts, height, polyploidy), but biotic interactions were taken as the important factor traditionally (enemy release hypothesis). Plants usually lose at least some of their herbivores and/or pathogens during transfer and this can lead to greater competitive ability in the invaded range. Although the effect is often smaller than it was thought, still in many cases the original enemies did suppress the invasive species in the invaded area. This approach is called biocontrol and has been used in many parts of the world with varying success. Pathogens are often used because of their narrower host specialization. Therefore there is quite a large literature on this both general and experimental. This thesis aims to summarize theoretical, database, and experimental studies in invasive plant pathology and to give a comprehensive account of the effect (or lack thereof) of pathogens on plant invasions. Further, it can look for other factors (environmental, historic, origin) influencing the biocontrol or pathogen spread success. |
