Preliminary scope of work
Growing up, myself and my family have always been referred to as “expats”, because every 3-4 years we would move to another country due to the nature of my father’s job. My case is not unique, I was always surrounded with other families like ours, and this has also been reflected in the terminology we use, words such as “transnationalism”, “expats”, “citizens of the world” are heard more and more often. For my research project, therefore, I would like to focus on the study of expats, and paticularly expat spaces, in Prague, and through inductive research, explore how do expats in Prague use and perceive spaces of expat socialization, whether these are physical spaces (bars, clubs), online spaces, social spaces (safe spaces, private/public spaces), or geographical places (neighbourhoods), and how do these spaces help them overcome the problems and challenges of being an expat abroad. Relevant theorization includes topics related to transnationalism, migration, diaspora studies, and most importantly, anthropology of space.
