Preliminary scope of work in English
Plant and animal mitochondrial genomes are very different. The size of plant mitogenomes may be very large, sometimes reaching millions of kb. Variation in number of genes were reported even among closely related plant species. Some species show highly accelerated mutation rates and frequent intragenomic recombinations in their mitochondria. Horizontal gene transfer affecting plant mitochondrial genomes was described in several species, but its real extent is not known. The topic of the bachelor thesis will be the evaluation of horizontal gene transfer from unrelated species to plant mitogenome based on the search in recent literature on plant mitochondria, which is growing exponentially. This topic may also cover the transfer of plastid DNA into mitogenome and its frequency in various phylogenetic lineages.
