Preliminary scope of work |
normalizaci queer osob i díky tomu, že drag shows/travesti shows přesahují z úzce definovaného prostředí kabaretů a klubů do běžného života a každodenní reality. |
Preliminary scope of work in English |
This diploma thesis of the self-presentation explores the aspects of self-presentation and social perception of a group of 5 selected drag queens. The thesis has a form of 5 case studies based on deep analysis of their profiles on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, which are currently the most used social networks. The areas of interest in this diploma thesis were the visual presentation of their drag identity, the trends their profiles show in areas of make-up, wig or hair, costume and body position in which they are shown on their profiles. The second area of interest was the nature of the textual presentation and captions, use of hashtags and interaction with their audience. Third are of interest was the audience itself, whether it was supportive in terms of drag and LGBTQ+ community in general and the nature of the interaction with the audience. The results from the content analysis were then summarized and used as a basis for semi-structured interview based on the outcomes from the said content analysis. Each drag queen has a specific way of doing drag and they are consistent in self-presentation while keeping this showcase of doing drag in mind. The study found that there is no way to generalize the results and each drag queen has a specific view on her self-presentation and uses her profiles for self-promotion in manners that are specific for each of her profiles. The audience proved to differ on selected media. All the audiences on Instagram are generally very supportive in terms of LGBTQ+ community, the Instagram users interacting with the content on each profile is generally very inclusive, consisting of spectrum of drag performers or people who are a part of the community, supportive males and females. The presentation on selected social media differs in the nature of the content. While Instagram seems to be generally taken as a portfolio of performative work, using TikTok seems to be more targeted to entertain the viewers with use of gay humor. The audience on TikTok seem to be polarized in their perception of the content shared to the profiles of selected drag queens, wide range of people who see the content results in hate comments. The participants see the potential to gain more visibility on social media and they agree that the increased visibility is necessary for further promotion of the LGBTQ+ media and tolerance in the society, however, they all agree that the tolerance towards this community is improving and that the representation on social media might have an effect on this. Apart from one drag queen, all of them agree that their drag identity is an extension to their civil self and that their drag identity broaden their opportunities for self-expression. All of them agree that drag has opened the way to gain stable self-esteem and feeling of confidence within their bodies. |
