Preliminary scope of work in English
Teeth of the majority of extant vertebrates are present either in the oral region at jaws and palate, or deeply in pharynx at the posterior-most gill arch. The ancestral state of vertebrate dentitions is, however, presence of teeth accross the whole oropharyngeal cavity. This trait is nonetheless exerted in only few members of extant fishes (e.g. bichir or latimeria), whereas other lineages experienced gradual evolutionary reduction of teeth and tooth fields and alocation of dentition to certain loci. The proposed Bachelor thesis should comprise a comparative study on patterning of pharyngeal dentitions of vertebrates, their evolutionary modifications and losses. Special account should be taken to basal lineages of ray-finned fishes, whose members will be utilized during the Diploma project.
