The voles (Rodentia: Arvicolidae) are a group of rodents which undergo an extensive recent radiation, mainly during the climate fluctuations of Pleistocene. This study will focus on summarizing our knowledge on the phylogenetic diversity and karyotype evolution of the speciose genus Microtus, with more than 65 extant species evolved during the last 2 million years and distributed throughout the Palearctic and Nearctic regions, as well as its closely related genera.
