Preliminary scope of work
The student will review current scientific literature on the topic of homeostatic memory and virtual memory T cells. Homeostatic memory T cells are generated from naive CD8+ Tlymphocytes during lymphopenia. Virtual memory CD8+ T cells also do not represent true immunological memory, because they are generated in the absence of a cognate foreign antigen. In contrast to homeostatic memory T cells, virtual memory T cells naturally occur in healthy lymphoreplete hosts. The origin of virtual memory T cells is still unclear, but they might represent the same T cell subset as experimentally induced homeostatic memory T cells. Gene expression signature and functional characteristics of homeostatic and virtual memory T cells will be compared to resolve whether or not homeostatic memory and virtual memory T cells represent the same differentiation program. Last but not least, the student will compare these T cells populations with conventional „true“ memory T cells that are formed upon exposure to cognate foreign antigens.
