Preliminary scope of work

Předkládaná práce se věnuje Matěji Procházkovi (1811–1889), významné postavě náboženského a vlasteneckého života na Moravě ve druhé polovině 19. století a členovi tzv. Sušilovy družiny. Podrobný životopis je výsledkem historického bádání, v němž byl využit pramenný materiál z několika různých archivů na Moravě. Procházkův život je zde rozdělen do tří období. Dětství a studentská léta strávil postupně v rodné Brtnici, v Jihlavě a v Brně. Po vysvěcení na kněze sloužil šestnáct let v různých farnostech brněnské diecéze. Poté, bezmála čtyřicet let, žil v Brně, kde působil jako gymnaziální učitel
a katecheta a angažoval se v činnosti národně buditelské, spolkové, vzdělávací
a především publikační. Tato práce dále mapuje význam osobnosti Matěje Procházky z pohledu jeho současníků a následujících generací až po tu dnešní a podává celkovou charakteristiku tohoto muže. Součástí práce je nová a výrazně obohacená bibliografie tohoto spisovatele, žurnalisty, překladatele, recenzenta, básníka a autora vědeckých pojednání. Tematicky se jeho díla týkala církevní historie a hagiografie, jazykovědy, přírodních věd a filozofie, apologetiky, morálky, sociálního učení a několika dalších oborů. Všechna uvedená témata jsou analyticky a kriticky zpracována. Zajímavá je hlubší myšlenková souvislost mezi učitelem Matějem Procházkou a bývalým studentem Tomášem Garrigue Masarykem.

Preliminary scope of work in English

The following work is about Matěj Procházka (1811–1889), an important figure of national and ecclesiastical life in Moravia in 19th century and a member of the circle around Professor František Sušil, the-so-called Sušilova družina. The detailed biography presented here is the result of historical research into resource materials from several different archives in Moravia. This work examines three main periods of Procházka’s life. He spent his childhood and student years, firstly, in his native town of Brtnice, then in Jihlava and Brno. After ordination, he served as a priest for sixteen years in different parishes of Brno diocese. Then he lived in Brno for nearly forty years while working as
a secondary grammar school teacher and catechist and being involved in different activities, such as the Czech national revival, Catholic associations, education, and especially, publishing. This work maps the importance of the personage of Matěj Procházka as seen by his contemporaries and by following generations up to the present. It also brings out the overall characteristics of this priest. A part of this study is a new and enlarged bibliography of Procházka’s works, as writer, journalist, translator, reviewer, poet, and author of scientific and scholarly treatises. In his works, he covered a wide range of subjects including Church history and hagiography, linguistics, natural sciences and philosophy, apologetics, Christian ethics, social teaching and other fields. All these above mentioned themes are analysed and critically researched, evaluated and examined. An interesting point that was found is the deeper intellectual affinity between Matěj Procházka, the teacher, and Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, his former student.
