| : To achieve the aims of this thesis a research method called scenario building will be used to link the theories with empirical observation. I will apply the key hypothesis of the theories in order to unfold the possible future. |

| Preliminary scope of work |
| The aims of this thesis are the following: (i) to explore the applicability of two theories of international relations in building future scenarios: neorealism and constructivism; (ii) to draft probable upcoming scenarios of the European Union's (EU) action as a response to a rise of a possible threat.
My thesis is structured in five chapters. I begin the thesis with an introduction of the theoretical frameworks I have chosen, including their respective criticism. I then proceed by identifying the key elements of scenarios and in the following chapter draft the actual scenarios. In the fourth section I compare the scenarios in order to find similarities and differences in theories and deduce possible implications they might have. Finally, I conclude with a summary of the findings an evaluation of the method. Research question: How could future Europe look like according to the constructivist and the neorealist theory Hypothesis: If potential hegemon is not present and NATO would be still in Europe, no change in balance of power will occur. If solidarity exists between the member states of EU, they would consider each other as part of the Self and would provide help in case of external threat. |
