When the course guarantor is selected, comments will be displayed regarding his/her teaching performance as well as that of all the other teachers teaching the course. If a teacher who is not the course guarantor is selected, only comments related to his/her teaching will be displayed.
Mgr. Martin Popel, Ph.D. [32-UFAL], Modern Methods in Computational Linguistics [NPFL095, seminář]
Benjamin Reeves, 10.01.2026, 1. Year, Computer Science - Language Technologies and Computational Linguistics, Master's (post-Bachelor)
Professor Popel did a great job adding key information and highlighting points that I would have not thought of while reading the paper on my own. The class was structured very well and I appreciate Professor Popel's willingness to stay after to discuss more.

Mr. Popel manages to organize the discussion throughout the seminars such that students are engaged in the analysis of the paper. He also often explains some general concepts and details about NLP, MT, transformers, and ML such as differences between encoder and decoder-based architectures which is very useful.

I've never had a course act as a reading group but it was a great experience. It made research papers much less daunting to go through. I appreciate how the papers built on each other and the questions made sure I got the key ideas out of each paper. The lectures themselves felt like a free flow of ideas.

This course is a great opportunity to learn how to read papers thoughtfully. I appreciated that we covered not only well-known, must-read papers in NLP field, but also devoted time to recently published articles of the group's choosing.
However, I'd note that the course requires more work-at-home preparation time than one might expect judging by credits estimation - weekly thorough readings + preparation of your own presentation took lots of effort throughout the semester.

This course allows students to explore scientific papers of their choice, learn to analyze the text, and discuss the works of researchers. It's nice to see what themes are interesting for students since often the discussed paper is chosen by students themselves. Of course, proposing some recent research on LLMs and talking about new ML techniques was interesting as well.
