Objectives:
Study of space weathering components using lunar swirl and asteroid data (for example asteroid Itokawa observations and sample return) - Evaluation of differences in solar wind and cosmic dust microimpacts on evolution and optical effects of space weathering. - Experimental verification of observations and model data through laboratory space weathering simulations with minerals, meteorites, and lunar regolith simulant materials. Research plan: The doctoral project will be conducted as a joint supervision doctoral project between MFF UK and Faculty of Science, University of Helsinki. Lunar swirls are shielded by magnetic field from solar wind, but not from microimpact bombardment. As space weathering related to microimpacts of dusty grains is amplified here, it is possible to study optical changes related to microimpacts. In contrast, samples from Itokawa asteroid delivered by Hayabusa spacecraft are predominantly subjected to radiation damage caused by solar wind and related optical changes can be studied here. These trends will be studied using lunar remote sensing data (M3 spectrometer data from Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft) and empirically (reflectance spectra measurements of Itokawa sample return). Furthermore, laboratory space weathering simulations using ion and dust bombardment) will be done with mineral samples to verify these trends. The observed spectral changes will be subject to light scattering modelling (using existing SIRIS code with custom modifications) in order to relate optical effects to distinct products of space weathering observed on the lunar and Itokawa regolith particles (metallic nanoparticles, blistering). Experimental work will be done at Department of Physics, University of Helsinki which is fully equipped to do these tasks. Financing of this work will be gathered from Finnish grant foundations. |
