Lenses between displays and user's eyes are an important component of virtual reality headsets,
because they make it possible for users to watch at displays placed very close to their eyes. Furthermore, they can give users the feeling of wider field of view. However, an inherent property of real lenses is that they cause image distortion. To counteract the distortion, the displayed image needs to be deformed in the opposite direction, such that the deformations cancel each other. As VR-lenses typically cause a pincushion-like distortion, current systems usually apply barrel distortion to the rendered image. Nevertheless, in order to reach more precise, verifiable results and to support more complex types of lenses, further research is necessary. The goals of this thesis are: * to design a system for measurement of distortion of a given lens * to compare different approaches to distortion compensation in terms of quality of the result as well as computational costs * to devise an undistortion method suitable for a single specific lens with complex distortion properties. The following phenomena need to be considered: * chromatic aberration (the distortion differs for each colour) * the change of the lens distortion as the position of the lens with respect to the display changes. |
