Research question and motivation
School bullying is a behavioural phenomenon widely recognized as a worldwide problem, attracting attention of many educators and policy makers over the past decades. Global prevalence of school bullying is large, it is estimated that 246 million children and adolescents experience school violence and bullying in some form every year (UNESCO, 2017). One of the major consequences of bullying is its negative effect on children’s learning. In recent years, a number of research papers have been focused on examining the causal effect of peer victimization on academic achievement of students, bringing relatively rich evidence from other countries (Busch et al., 2014). However, there has not been any comparable study presented in the Czech Republic despite the fact that nearly half of all Czech primary schools (47,2%) reported presence of bullying during 2012 – 2015 (Czech School Inspectorate, 2016).
Therefore, the aim of my thesis is to comment on risk factors of being bullied and to investigate the possible impact of school bullying on academic performance of primary school’s children in the Czech Republic.

Contribution
The thesis should broaden the existing research by studying the effect of school bullying on the primary school children’s academic performance in the Czech Republic. The results might be of interest to schools and policy-makers.
Methodology
The data I am going to investigate in my thesis are cross-sectional data from TIMSS 2015 (the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) and PIRLS 2016 (the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) for the fourth-graders in the Czech Republic. The data about the pupils’ performance in mathematics, science and reading are accompanied by data gathered through context questionnaires, allowing me to study and control other factors affecting the impact of bullying on the academic performance of pupils.
I am going to apply an ordinary least squares (OLS) estimation controlled for a number of individual and family characteristics and school fixed effects. Also, I would like to use propensity score matching (PSM) techniques to mitigate the impact of confounding factors.
