Předběžná náplň práce |
Following the post-election protests and widespread civil arrests in Belarus in 2020, Belarusian folk artistic practices have experienced a resurgence as tools for political resistance and identity formation. In response to these events, Prague-based Belarusian artist Rufina Bazlova started a collective embroidery project titled "Framed in Belarus," initially aimed at increasing visibility for Belarusian political prisoners. Participants embroidered images of political prisoners in the style of Belarusian folk ornament, following digital patterns created by Bazlova. After completing the embroidery, the participants recorded their thoughts on the project in letters. Using this project and the participants’ letters as a case study, this thesis examines the role of folk artistic practices in shaping new cultural and political narratives. More specifically, it looks into how collective folk embroidery art-making can challenge authoritarian state in non-heroic and sustainable ways when direct political expression is not possible. |
