Předběžná náplň práce v anglickém jazyce |
This diploma thesis engages in a nuanced examination of two very recent novels, namely Martin MacInnes´s novel In Ascension (2023) and Julia Armfield´s novel Our Wives Under the Sea (2022). By examining the related concepts of Anthropocene, ecocriticism and, to some extent, oceanic studies the thesis sheds light on the dynamics of human interconnectedness with the environment and nature.
In the theoretical part of this thesis, we embark on a comprehensive literature review of ecocritical discourse, particularly with an emphasis on the “Anthropocene” and related concepts such as “Capitalocene” or “Technocene”. Furthermore, the thesis takes into consideration the concept of trans-corporeality and the symbiotic interactions between human agents and the environment - specifically the body of the ocean. Subsequently, the practical part proposes a literary analysis based on the concepts scrutinised and described in the theoretical part. The thesis seeks, through a comparative lens, to interpret and understand the human condition in the “Anthropocene” and how the novels skilfully capture the perpetual flux of exchange between humanity and the environment. The theoretical foundation informs the practical part, which provides an in-depth examination of the themes and concepts put forth, including trans-corporeal experiences, elements of the spirit of human-dominated age and how the ocean can be analysed as an inexhaustible source of symbols and meanings for humanity. |
