The place of identities in political and social life is needed to be analysed in depth to understand the dynamics of these spheres of a country. Identity is especially critical in country like Turkey that is diverse in terms of not only the gene pool, but also the social identities it is home to. Politics of Turkey cannot be considered without a good understanding of these identities and how different identities were securitized over the years. The topic is specifically relevant to the current political climate of the country as there is evident polarization driven by such securitization.
There is some work on the issue already, but none that covers the mechanisms of securitization of the Kurdish, queer, women, and other minority identities in a manner that could offer an analysis on the actions of the current government and the effects that can be seen in certain demographics. The novelty of this topic is the unique approach it has from a social ground, and its focus on the public speech and specifically securitization done through public political speech, which is followed by securitization in the political, social, and under law. Summary: Firstly, there will be an Introduction to the case and why it is important to be studied. As mentioned above, the case is integral to understanding the politics of Turkey and possibly having a glimpse on its future. Any academic that has the aim to work on this field would have to consider in detail the role identities have in Turkey and the role that securitization plays in the polarized society. The study could have wider implications in terms of pattern recognition in authoritarian regimes. The Introduction will be followed by a Literature Review and why there is a need for a different approach in certain ways, stating the added value of the paper. The subject could be covered with qualitative data alone and thus, Qualitative Content Analysis as a tool to understand polarization and securitization of identities in Turkey will be the followed methodology. After literature review and methodology, there will be a chapter focusing on Conceptualization of Securitization, Identity, and Polarization and all relevant concepts. After setting a theoretical base, the methodology and approach will be more detailed. A source that could be used is also the interviews from certain academics from Turkey that work in different fields on this topic, the details of which will be discussed and considered further. After setting the methodological base as well, the Turkish identities will be explained briefly to introduce the topic to the Mechanisms of Securitization of Turkish Identities. In this chapter, a chain of causality will be created starting from media and public speech concerning identities, the leak of this securitization to the political and social spheres, and the implementation of it in the legal sphere. Following this chapter, there will be a chapter on the Polarization of Turkish Society followed by a small chapter detailing a bit on the Different Effects on Communities. Concluding the thesis, there will be chapters on Limitations and Conclusion. The thesis will be written with the aim to offer an explanation to the following two questions: What are the mechanisms of identity securitization in Turkey? How has the securitization of identities played into increased polarization in political and social spheres? Methodology: The Qualitative Data Analysis as a tool to understand the identity securitization and polarization in Turkey will be used. In doing so, the research hopes to achieve gathering the necessary information that is not available in a paper together. The topic is somewhat researched but the connections mentioned in this paper are not carefully made but could be reached to through only qualitative data. If applicable, certain answers to interview questions will also be used per their relevance. |
