Description of the Thesis Topic: Today, the relationship between the United Kingdom at its European partners across the channel seems to be at one of its coldest moments. The United Kingdom decided to leave the European Union in a referendum only five years ago. Currently, the United Kingdom finds itself in several severe conflicts with the bloc. Be it the Northern Ireland Protocol, legitimacy of European Court of Justice, new trade border rules, competition and fishing rights, blaming match over dead migrants, residency rights and travel, disruption of trade and supply of labor, and COVID-19 vaccines, it seems that there is a lot of mistrust and resentment between former partners. With the current topic of dismal relations between the United Kingdom and the European Union, I want to come back to the, in my opinion, most formative years for UK-EU relations.
Margaret Thatcher´s position as the prime minister played a decisive role in the United Kingdom and the European Union. Since becoming prime minister, Thatcher played both European pragmatic and integration eurosceptic. She was both a conservative in some sense and neoliberal in others. In this thesis, I will first define the ideological framework of Margaret Thatcher. After defining her ideological views, I will examine how her position and ideological beliefs towards the EU have developed as prime minister. I will describe the overall policy towards European integration in the United Kingdom prior to Margaret Thatcher. Then, I will describe her specific policies and their effect on the partnership and deeper integration with European Communities. The paper is divided into a specific span of years. I will focus on the pivotal moments and how Margaret Thatcher and her conservatism have influenced the UK-EC partnership as a prime minister within each span. Methodology: Throughout the paper, I will be using a qualitative research method. I will be collecting non-numerical data from primary and secondary texts and speeches to interpret how the conservatism of Margaret Thatcher influenced the position of Britain in the European Community. Outline: 1. Introduction of the topic 2. Ideology a. Contrasting Liberalism and Conservatism b. Defining the ideological framework of Margaret Thatcher 3.
