Technology has constantly changed the way bank operates. Currently, there are two major views on the impacts of financial innovation on banks: 1) the innovation-growth view, which believes that financial innovation leads to bank growth; 2) the innovation-fragility view, which believes that financial innovation makes the bank more fragile. Recent empirical results indicate mixed findings. Existing literature focuses on indicators of specific new financial instruments such as asset-backed securities instead of holistic indicators when measuring financial motivation. The author decides to adopt more holistic indicators to measure financial innovation. The author is also interested in learning whether financial innovation has a positive impact on the banking sector during the COVID-19 pandemic since lots of activities shift to online channels after the COVID-19 outbreak. Therefore, this essay aims to examine both views on the banking sector in 22 European Union countries, with a specific focus on the COVID-19 pandemic period.
