Research question and motivation

The key question examined in this bachelor thesis is the impact of COVID-19 on the Airbnb market in the Czech Republic.

Enhanced by advancing technology, the sharing economy is becoming more and more popular. Airbnb, Inc presents a crucial part of the peer-to-peer (P2P) accommodation rental market, as it has been the leader of this category for several years now enabling users of Airbnb's online platform to connect hosts and customers from all around the world.

The vast majority of aspects of both social and economic life were devastatingly affected by the outbreak of COVID-19 in late 2019. Due to the closed borders of many countries for several months, the tourism sector faced an unprecedented crisis and is considered to be one of the most seriously impacted sectors (UNWTO, 2020). During the affected period occupancy rates of all accommodating facilities either stagnated or declined with Airbnb facing significant drops as well. DuBois (2020) suggests that travel restrictions induced up to 96% decline in the bookings on the Airbnb platform while Doclinare and Zare (2020) predict that the levels of occupancies will recover but not to the pre-covid levels any time soon.

While there is a suggestion for the global Airbnb market, there is only very little information describing the case of Airbnb in the Czech Republic. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to examine and report the development of the post-covid state of the Airbnb market in the Czech Republic.

Contribution

Despite the fact that the effect of COVID-19 on the economy is a widely discussed topic and the worldwide research on the effect of the virus outbreak on Airbnb is rather extensive, the research conducted on the micro-level of the Czech Republic appears to be scarce. Furthermore, to the author's best knowledge there is currently no existing analysis on the impact of COVID-19 on the Czech Airbnb market taking into account the summer of 2020 and further. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to broaden the current knowledge of this topic on the micro-level of the Czech Republic.

Methodology
The aim is to use available data regarding the Czech Airbnb market and conduct an analysis on the micro-level. The data will be used for the estimation of a regression model. Specifically, occupancy information prior, during, and post COVID-19 will be used for the analysis. Obtained results can be further compared.
