| Schopenhauer’s magnum opus The World as Will and Representation introduces the metaphysical will as being behind the manifestation of everything in existence. As human subjects, we have a distinct interaction with the Will of the World, seeing that not only our bodies and the physical world around is constituted of manifestations of the will but that we also have an internal realm full of mental experiences outside of any physical manifestations of the WotW. As a human being I have a will of my own, and even though the sheer existence of this will is just another manifestation of the metaphysical WotW, analysing that contents of said will potentially open doors to different interpretations.
“Man can do what he wills but he cannot will what he wills.” Schopenhauer famously said, yet various instances of actions and motivations allow different interpretations of the metaphysical WotW and its influence on my own subjective will. This thesis will try to answer how far these interpretations can go in the philosophy of Schopenhauer to answer to what extent it is sensible to speak of volition in Schopenhauer’s thinking. Identifying different types of motivations allows for a broad overview of different volitions and their connection to the WotW hopefully providing insight onto to what extent my own volitions are subjected or free from the WotW. |
