Research question and motivation

I would like to study the consumption of meat in the European Union as well as describe the current trends and patterns in world meat consumption. My goal would be to check if the individual propensity to consume meat varies across countries of the European Union and find out which factors affect the consumption the most. I would like to take advantage of the data structure, which divides the meat consumption data into groups, and try to assess the relationship between various meat types.

My thesis will compare and analyze meat consumption in the European Union member countries in the year 2018, with meat consumption data ranging from 2000 to 2018, existing literature does not really cover meat consumption of different types of meat in recent years.
The research results could be used to predict meat consumption in upcoming years or by European Commission’s policymakers when designing policies regarding the meat market.

The main data I am going to work with are going to be taken from the food balance section of FAOSTAT (Food and Agriculture Organization Corporate Statistical Database), I will use them to estimate sales of meat types in the individual countries. I will use UNECE (The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) and EUROSTAT (European Statistical Office) to obtain time-series data regarding the countries in question, specifically data about population, employment, average salary and urbanization.
My estimation framework will start by running pooled OLS model to decide which variables to include in my next steps. I will be performing tests such as Lagrange Multiplier (LM) Test, the F-test of coefficients and most importantly Hausman test to decide if my data is suitable for better models that do not ignore panel structure of obtained data such as fixed effects or random effects model.
