My thesis will analyze the geopolitical effects of US sanctions imposed upon Venezuela. Currently there is a well-known crisis in Venezuela with high inflation and an ongoing debate about the legitimacy of Nicolas Maduro’s presidency. The US has imposed a series of sanctions over time, targeting the Venezuelan economy and citing reasons such as terrorism, drug trafficking, and human rights violations. These sanctions have caused changes in the Venezuelan economy and have impacted Venezuelan geopolitical relations – both with neighboring nations (Colombia) and bigger powers (The West and the East). The thesis will analyze these effects and aim to form a causal relationship between the sanctions and the geopolitical shifts. I will look at texts and speeches in both English and Spanish. During the research process, it is possible that the focus will slightly change or open new insights on the subject – I will adjust accordingly.
Working hypotheses: 1. Hypothesis #1: US sanctions on Venezuela are impacting their economy and geopolitical relations 2. Hypothesis #2: The sanctions used by the US are successful (or unsuccessful) in achieving their overall goals. 3. Hypothesis #3: The US sanctions are causing a shift in geopolitical relations between Venezuela and its allies (and neighbors, e.g. Colombia). Methodology: The methodology should correspond to the hypotheses and the available material specified above. You can briefly describe which theoretical and analytical concepts based on deduction or induction (i.e. on empirical or experimental approaches) you are going to employ. To support these hypotheses, I will rely on both quantitative and qualitative methods. I will analyze the text of various speeches by Maduro and Guaidó to analyze how they frame the sanctions and to analyze their arguing points on which sides (allies) to support. I will also look at the numbers in regard to trade – mainly focusing on PDVSA, the Venezuelan state-owned oil company, and how their sales have changed. I will compare the changes with the various sanctions that have been imposed upon Venezuela over time and attempt to find causal links. |
