Fish are known to adapt their sensory systems on a large evolutionary scale, as well as during development of a single individual. The proposed PhD. project is focused on the performance and molecular background of the sensory systems in fishes and their changes during ontogeny. Genomic and transcriptomic methods will be employed to identify molecular evolution and mechanisms of sensory adaptation in fishes, i.e. the whole genomes and sets of functionally expressed genes (=transcriptomes) will be explored to identify modifications of visual, olfactory and gustatory sensory systems. The project is focused on the model groups of African cichlids (Cichlidae), European cyprinids (Cyprinidae) and the deep-sea fishes (orders Stomiiformes, Myctophiformes, Beryciformes). The proposed project aims to integrate the findings of molecular genetics with the developmental perspective and compare different groups across phylogeny, and it offers a combination of field observation, experimental setups and various laboratory approaches.
