The aim of this thesis will be to analyse the origin, development and possible interpretation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s character of Gandalf the wizard. The choice of character is based on its unique role within the story as well as the fantasy genre itself. It aims to illustrate the parallel between the development of the character and Tolkien’s literary universe as whole, discussing its individual stages as well as the writer’s most influential sources of inspiration. Thanks to the character's presence in all three Tolkien’s major works it experiences the gradual shift in the author’s narrative style and technique as well as the story's development from children’s book to complex fictional mythology. As a character of Tolkien’s literary cosmos, it has unparalleled number of possible sources and interpretations, which together draw strong connection between his work and European mythological and Medieval romance tradition. Furthermore, the thesis will include a section dealing with theoretical approach to the character as a product of myth-making, its comparison with the genre’s traditional schemes and archetypes as well as a discusion of the possibility of understanding the work as a continuation/ reinvention of the Medieval romance tradition. The work will also include a detailed discussion of the origin of the character’s name(s), appearance, character traits, roles and related characters in works of European mythology and medieval fiction as well as modern literary works. As result, the thesis will offer a comprehensive overview of the character’s meaning both in the context of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work and the genre of fantasy and myth-making.
