| Though we can easily recognize a familiar face, we find it hard to describe it efficiently with words. This poses practical challenges for certain areas, for example, in forensics. On the other hand, it has been noted (Garrod & Doherty 1994) that participants of a collaborative task often develop language conventions that allow them to describe aspects specific to the task in a more efficient manner would be possible using the conventional language.
The goal of this thesis is to investigate whether such sub-language develops in tasks requiring face description and whether the sub-language differs for English and Chinese speakers. The collection of face-description related dialog data should be achieved via a collaborative computer game. Data from both native English and native Chinese speakers should be collected. |
