Research question and motivation
I am going to study the economy of the countries of ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) compared to the countries of the European Union. More specifically, after the general analysis of the mentioned institutions, I will try to have a deeper look at their monetary unions, CFA (Financial Community of Africa) and EMU (European Monetary Union). Finally, I will be able to compare the economies of Togo (member of ECOWAS and CFA) and Slovakia (member of EU and EMU). By means of econometric analysis and methods of comparative economics I will try to analyse the impact of memberships in the unions on the economic development of Togo and Slovakia.

I consider it important to work on this specific topic because it is good to be aware of the economic differences in the world and what might cause them. It is stereotypical to think about African countries as poor ones, but one should try to understand why and whether it is really true, compared to European countries.

Contribution
There are many papers dealing with the economy and the economic development of African countries and European countries, respectively. However, there are just a few which actually try to compare both and point out the differences. If I will be successful in my analysis, the results might be used for further analysis of whether there exists a reasonable way to help African countries to reach the economic level of Europe or what the states’ economies can learn from each other. Another possibility would be to go into further details in analysing the cultural, religious, or climate environments and their impact on the economic differences.

Methodology
I will be using econometric analysis with panel data. One group of data will be made of approximately 15 African countries representing ECOWAS and the second one will be made of the same number of EU countries. Then, I will use statistical software to provide me with the analysis of the data and make conclusions hopefully helpful to analyse the impact of memberships in the unions on the economic development of Togo and Slovakia.
I will use data available on the internet: World Bank Open Data, Index of Economic Freedom, Numbeo – Cost of Living, ecostat.org.
