Research question and motivation

The main purpose of this study is to examine poverty in terms of assets at the individual or household level. The main research question addressed in the study is how asset poverty evolves over the life cycle. The measurement of poverty is usually based on income, while assets are often ignored. The main reason for ignoring assets is the difficulty of gaining information on assets at an individual level. In my thesis I would like to take a deeper look at asset poverty and at the life cycle, in which the position of an individual or household is changing in connection with his/her age. I would like to specify the periods of the changes separately for an individual and for a household.

Contribution

The main contribution of this thesis relative to the existing literature is the possibility to extend the analysis of poverty measurement taking into account assets and the life cycle theory features. We expect to show that retired people will turn out to be in a better asset position than younger people, which does not necessarily have to be evident from the view of income use.

Methodology

One of the approaches to the measurement of asset poverty is based on the perception of what the net position of an individual would be if he/she sold all his assets and afterwards lived on the revenues from these assets. I will construct an econometric model (quantile regression) with assets as the response variable, and age as the key explanatory variable. The estimations will be performed with R software for numerical analysis and as the source of the data I will use the HFCS 2010 and 2014 microdata from the National Bank of Slovakia.
