The main idea of this work is to analyze in which way the construction of the Emperor Francis’ Channel (1793-1801) made impact on the urbanization processes in the southern Hungarian region of Bács-Bodrog County. More specifically, this work will be focused around the case of the free royal town of Sombor, and the time period that will be under observation would include decades between 1780s and 1830s. In order to analyze potential ameliorations of the urban processes in the aforementioned town, several initial assumptions were made, on the basis of the available literature.
Brothers Kiss, as the creators of the Channel, aimed to improve the trade in the region with the construction of the new waterway, which would connect two of the largest rivers there, Danube and Tisa, thus shortening the naval way between different points on them. This trade mainly referred to the cargos of salt that were heading from the regions rich with that good, namely Maros County, to the other parts of the Monarchy. More relevant for this work are different goods that were experiencing potential enlargement in the general export. As present literature scarcely suggests, there was improvement in trade with grains, namely cereals, from Sombor, placing it just behind town of Novi Sad. Furthermore, it is justified to make an assumption that this surplus of grains did not happened just because of appearance of new trade route, but also because of gradual draining of the ground, that led to the overall increase of the arable land in area of Sombor, which consequently led to larger percentage of the land under cultivation.
Channel also influenced drainage of the town’s inner area, which was constantly flooded during the rain seasons and after melting of the snow, with existing streams of river Mostonga in the very town’s center. In order to reduce this impediment, the system of ditches ought to be constructed, and the available literature suggests that this quest started in the late 1820s. Regardless of this delayed implementation of the plans for irrigation, the Emperor Francis’ Channel itself was an important prerequisite. Lastly, impact of the new naval route could show changes in structure of the trades and crafts and their potential increase in number, as they are one of main characteristics of the urban settlement. Sources that are available will show their actual state, and also their comparison with other towns (i.e. Novi Sad and Subotica) would be necessary.
