The emergence of mass tourism during the second half of the 19th century transformed increasingly the mountain spaces and their cultural meanings for nations, as the scholarship has shown in the last decade with several case studies. Nevertheless, this process was not yet thoroughly examined in the case of the Giant Mountains' border region. The thesis is devoted to the touristification of the Giant Mountains on both sides of the border, their interactions and links, their similarities and differences. The hypothesis is that this process led to the cultural importance of the mountains for Germans as part of national landscape, beyond the state boundaries, even if the development of tourism was stronger on the German side. To do so, the thesis will first conceptualize touristification, landscape and border and contextualize the emerging mass tourism in the scope of modernization. With the help of guidebooks, local newspapers and regional literature, it will then analyze the role of expanding infrastructures (transports, accommodations, hiking paths) and the different forms of advertisement (connected to the tourism industry, and its use of folklore and arts) at local and national levels in shaping a modern tourist landscape. It will finally scrutinize the representations of the mountains in the German guidebooks and the role of the border for Germans before 1914. |
