This dissertation explores the relationship between Russia’s position in a multilateral institution and the attitude of the state towards the organization. The case study of this research is Russia’s attitude towards all multilateral institutions it participated in 2001-2015. This work’s findings are derived from an extensive dataset that comprises a recently released online archive of the Ministry Foreign Affairs as well as scrutinized analysis of Russia’s attitude towards the SCO, the OSCE, and the WTO. Based on this, I prove the hypothesis that Russian attitude depends on the position it has within an institution. Specifically, my findings state that when Moscow holds a strong position in an institution, the country develops a supportive attitude; Russia’s weak position within an institution translates into a challenger attitude. I conduct the research at qualitative and quantitative levels, which together form a comprehensive overview of the Russian attitude towards all multilateral institutions that this country participates in.
