Zásady pro vypracování
Mesopotamian mīs pî (washing of the mouth) rituals are primarily concerned with induction of cultic images, and so is the literature dealing with them. Nevertheless, there is enough evidence for mīs pî in a broader, less literal, sense. The best preserved example is the ritual for covering a kettledrum, lilissu-drum, which came down to us in several versions, from the Neo-Assyrian and Hellenistic periods. Apart from that, there is also a commentary on this ritual. Other material includes mīs pî applied to a torch, a ceremonial axe, a footstool, or a man. Apparently, mīs pî should not be regarded exclusively as a ritual concerned with statues and other godly images (such as symbols or standards). My aim is to compare the ritual for the kettledrum with the classical mīs pî and point out their similarities as well as dissimilarities. I will also investigate the reasons why these very similar rituals are included in different scholars’ lores (namely those of kalû, lamentation priests, and of āšipū, exorcists). Consequences should follow for these scholars’ competences and their mutual relations and cooperation. Other evidence for mīs pî will also be included to show the whole range of material. Therefore, I will address the question of status of these cultic paraphernalia and their possible deification. Finally, the notion of mīs pî shall be reconsidered and interpreted anew.
