TOPIC CHARACTERISTICS
International system is built by sovereign states. The idea of state sovereignty is constantly evolving. In the post-Cold War period the idea of state sovereignty had dramatically returned into spotlight of international politics. Continually increasing number of entities across the world are seeking independence thus impacting existing sovereign states. Lack of international recognition to a number of entities seeking independence strengthens the normative nature of international state system. On the contrary, breach of respect for sovereignty of other states strengthens its descriptive nature. This thesis aims to shed insight into why certain states’ sovereignty is sustained whereas in other examples, separatist regions are supported thus negatively impacting parent state. This thesis aims at answering the following question: What are the determinants of US respect for other state’s sovereignty? As such, this thesis does not seek to argue in favor of the US exceptionalism but uses the example of the US as a starting point for further discussion. Hypotheses • State sovereignty selectively respected. • Respect/disrespect of state sovereignty by the US determined by the existence/lack of existence of interest. • The respect for state sovereignty by the US determined by state’s attitude towards NATO membership and position in oil transport. Methodology Choice of topic implies that the thesis is a comparative study by its nature. Following different stances by the US officials concerning state sovereignty of Georgia and Serbia, a brief analysis of discourse is used to outline the starting point of this research. An in depth, qualitative, analysis of the US position towards Georgia and Serbia is applied in order to present a holistic overview of the issue at stake. Similarly, quantitative methods such as statistical data are used in order to strengthen arguments and allow the reader simple and clear comparisons.
