Description of the topic:

The subject of economics of happiness has become very popular in recent years. Numerous theses have been devoted to questions what determines happiness of people and whether governments should target economic aspects or primarily focus on happiness of their citizens. What they usually find is that happiness does not depend on a single set of aspects because different groups of people need different things for them to be happy.

In my thesis I would like to divide people to several groups according to their religion, type of government, region where they live etc. and find out what are the main determinants of happiness for each of the specific groups and whether these determinants vary between them. I would like to find out whether people of different religions, cultures and places actually find different things important for them to feel happy. To make this research I will use database of surveys about happiness of people and combination of microeconomic and macroeconomic data such as personal income, education, size of the town where the respondent lives, income inequality in respondent's country, quality of environment in respondent's country etc. from official databases available online.

In the end I would like to be able to make a formula using econometric approach as a regression of happiness on as many important variables as possible including one's inherence to some of the studied groups as dummy variables. I believe this could help to answer the question for a certain government how much do some aspects determine the happiness of majority of its citizens. Consequently, this answer could be an advice for local governments on what should be their target if they want to improve the happiness of the majority of their citizens dependent whether they are for example mostly Muslims from Europe or mostly Christians from Latin America.
