Náplní práce je studium významu redoxních procesů v signalizaci kvality a zdraví jedince prostřednictvím ornamentů využívaných při výběru partnera u vlaštovky obecné (Hirundo rustica). Nutnost udržovat redoxní homeostázu (obrana proti oxidačnímu stresu) byla navržena jako univerzální mechanizmus propojující rozmnožování, imunitní reakce a jiné nákladné metabolické procesy s mírou investice jedince do nákladných ornamentů a tím zajišťující čestnost těchto kondičně závislých signálů. Student bude v rámci terénní části sbírat data o intenzitě pohlavních signálů (délka prodloužených ocasních per, intenzita melanoidního zbarvení ventrální části těla) a vzorky krve pro analýzu redoxního stavu, která bude náplní laboratorní části práce. Cílem bude testování očekávaných korelací mezi intenzitou ornamentů a ukazateli redoxního stavu. Součástí bude též testování nákladnosti ornamentů prostřednictvím jejich experimentální manipulace.

The aim of the work is to study the importance of redox processes in the signaling of quality and health of an individual through ornaments used in mate choice in the barn swallow (Hirundo rustica). The necessity to maintain redox homeostasis (the oxidative stress defence) is hypothesized as an universal mechanism linking reproduction, immune response and other costly metabolic processes of an individual with its investment in costly ornaments and thereby ensuring honesty of such condition dependent signals. In the field part of the work, student will collect data on the intensity of sexual signal expression (length of tail streamers, intensity of ventral melanin coloration) and collect blood samples for redox state analyses. These analyses will be done during the laboratory part of the work. The aim will be to test for hypothesized relationship between intensity of ornament expression and redox state markers. The costliness of the ornaments will be also tested experimentally by the means of the manipulation of their intensity.
