Zásady pro vypracování
Religion, and the Catholic Church especially, constitute a central element in Tom Murphy’s drama, reflecting the author’s troubled relationship to the institution throughout his life. His characters, traditionally outsiders undergoing identity crisis, have a “grudge against God” and struggle with nihilism. In their despair, they reproach and question God only to find a way to their own individual spirituality, in which the divine is manifested through the human: through the ability to love, to forgive and to reconcile with others, as well as with one self. In this transformed understanding of Christianity, redemption is achieved, the impossible becomes possible and sometimes, even miracles happen. Because the crisis of spirituality is always inextricably linked to crisis of identity in Murphy’s plays, with the characters left at a loss with their unhappy lives by everyone including the Church and thus forced to look for forgiveness and help elsewhere, this thesis will analyse the motifs of Christianity and spirituality with link to identity. It will point out the connection between spiritual emptiness of Murphy’s protagonists, both in religious and non-religious terms, and their struggle to fill the void and become “whole” through what the playwright calls “the personal conversion to one’s spirit”.
