The bottom quark (b-quark) is the heaviest quark known to form hadrons, i.e. composite particles formed of quarks bound by a strong force. These b-hadrons are produced in copious quantities at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and study of their properties is part of the wide physics program of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. B-physics, how the field is called, offers a great opportunity to test predictions of the Standard Model of elementary particles but also probes the new physics beyond the Standard Model.
The aim of this Bachelor project is to study the Lambda_b particle, the lightest of the b-baryons (i.e. hadrons consisting of three bound valence quarks, one of them being a b-quark). Since the Lambda_b is lighter than other b-baryons, its production rate is higher and therefore a relatively large data sample containing the Lambda_b candidates has been accumulated already at an early stage of the LHC operation. The student will analyze the available sample of reconstructed Lambda_b decays from the ATLAS experiment and use them to determine the mass of the baryon. Thesis character: Experimental, data analysis Thesis outline: 1/ The student will familiarize himself/herself with the ATLAS experiment 2/ The student will learn selected methods of processing and analysis of data from the ATLAS experiment 3/ The student will gain a basic level of competence using the common software tools for data analysis 4/ The student will apply the learned knowledge and experience to extract the Lambda_b baryon mass from the ATLAS data |
