Zásady pro vypracování

The aim of my research plan is to examine a process of creating different types of collective identities in the 18^th centuryTuscany. The core of the research is based on the examination of travel literature, memoires, diplomatic correspondence, and visual sources regardingEngland made by past travellers. The content analysis of primary sources (with the case study of a travelogue by Luigi Angiolini) is set within the broader factual and theoretical concept.
The thesis deals with a phenomenon called anglophilia (common fascination ofEngland in some European states). It is proper to consider it as a part of the Enlightenment movement. The country was admired for its incipient Industrial Revolution and for certain values such as freedom in political meaning, equality, empirical science, culture, and also for developed commerce. There was a common fascination of this country in some European states that was related to the enlightened way of thinking.
The Grand Duchy of Tuscany passed a series of enlightened reforms during the rule of Peter Leopold. For this reason, it is suitable to examine an image ofEnglandthrough traveller testimonies, particularly from the Tuscan part ofItaly. It is more likely that Tuscan travellers, touched by the Enlightenment were more sensitive to the perception ofEngland.
The main hypothesis of the thesis supposes that it is possible to define ourselves by creating and using an image of others. This concept is one of the basic historical approaches to travel literature. Newcomers tended to use their home background when behaving in the new country and in describing it. They came to a new country with previously formed views from their respective home backgrounds and were not without expectations and stereotypes.
