For modern cities the public spaces represent an important element of urbanism. The question is whether its morphology, function and ways (patterns) of use are identical, similar or different in various civilizational contexts. To explore this statement it is proposed to start from the works of modern and postmodern urban theory (Mumford, Sitte, Lynch, Krier). Their analysis should provide information about the approaches to the construction of urban public spaces. These authors worked on occidental tradition and examples of urbanism. The proposed thesis will apply the theory on the case study from Southern Mediterranean region, on a Syrian city of Latakia. Southern Mediterranean cities have roots in antiquity starting more than 2000 BC, they have been transformed during Arabic and Ottoman rule, and again transformed during colonial and postcolonial period.
The study will introduce Latakia city as a palimpsest of urban layers, with particular interest in the period from the beginning of the 20th century (from the French mandate) until 2010 with particular focus on the use of public spaces.
The study will first explore the meaning of public squares and other types of frequently designed public spaces which are one of the key element of the city design , and their role in the development of the European urban planning in several aspects ( social , culture and identity, aesthetic).
In the second perspective the study will explore the development and transformations of public spaces in Latakia through the optics of European Urbanism.
The study will analyze the design principles of urban squares and examine the meaning of a public squares in a city which looses its older parts imitating the modern design trend, and asks about the rules or specific concepts and meanings. It wishes to provide useful design principles by which Latakia Squares can develop in the future.
