The diploma thesis will be aimed at the use of activated carbon (AC) for removal of AOM (algal organic matter) amino acids during the drinking water treatment. Within the scope of the diploma thesis, several suitable types of granular activated carbon (GAC), or eventually powdered activated carbon (PAC), will be chosen for this purpose. Consequently, the selected types of activated carbon will be characterized in more detail from the point of view of their textural properties (pore size distribution, specific surface area) and the nature of their surface charge. During the laboratory (batch) tests the adsorption efficiency of the AOM amino aacids onto AC will be evaluated in dependence on their chemical structure (surface charge, affinity for water - hydrophobic vs. hydrophilic nature). Finally, the results of the adsorbents’ characterization and of the adsorption experiments will be used for detailed elucidation the adsorption mechanisms of particular components of AOM amino acids onto activated carbon.
