Topic: Effectiveness of Banking Regulation and Supervision in the Light of the Global Financial Crisis
Aim of thesis: The world of banking regulation is currently very heterogeneous, with many different approaches. None of them, however, has been uniformly recognized ideal. Closest to this achievement is the regulatory framework Basel, but even this one is still controversial among economists. Main aim of the thesis is an analysis of institutional background of banking regulation and supervision in several countries before the crisis, based on data from publication Rethinking Bank Regulation: Till Angels Govern (Barth J. R., Caprio Jr G., Levine R, 2008). These conclusions will subsequently be confronted with the impact of the 2008 crisis and the ability to recover from it. Answers to following questions will be sought in the thesis: • What was the „best practise“ of banking regulation and supervision untill the crisis? • Did this best practise prove to be successful even during the recent banking crisis? • Is the current regulatory trend, represented by Basel III, heading the right way? Outline: I. Introduction II. Theoretical background 1. Different kinds of banking regulation and supervision 2. Causes and impact of 2008 crisis III. Analysis of the data from before crisis IV. Effectiveness of different approaches to banking regulation and supervision V. Evaluation of Basel III VI. Conclusion |
