The aim of the thesis is to elaborate on the notion of class in Britain and to explore its contemporary perception. The thesis will consist of two parts. The first, theoretical one will cover the British conception of class in general and examine its various properties in detail. The latter will provide a reflection of the British class system in contemporary society, literature and TV production, such as The Forsyte Saga or Downton Abbey. The second part will also try to explain the popularity of the above-mentioned series. One of the key assumptions is that despite the generally negative characteristics of any class system, it is this very class distinction combined with conservative traditions to which the popularity of these British TV series can be attributed. For all attempts at formulating a classless society, Britishness, or at least Englishness is perceived as constructed, among others, through the social and cultural concept of class. The role of the media and popular culture in disseminating this notion and perpetuating a certain popular obsession with the class system, which cuts across other socio-economic dimensions of self-identification, is undeniable, itself shaped by and also contributing to the ongoing fascination with traditional representations of class (especially the upper class, but also traditional forms of working class etc.)The shift, transformations and stereotypes of this representation will, therefore, be the principal subject of the thesis.
