| Flannery O´Connor is one of the twentieth century’s finest writers of short stories. Her short stories and novels are interwoven with religious concerns accentuated by symbols and a black humour that is often very scornful and satirical. In connection with her style, I would like to discuss the role of satire and her enduring Catholic faith. I would like to focus how she interprets her idea of a religion that provides not a restriction, but enables her to observe and criticize the problems of the modern society. I will analyze O’Connor’s Catholic themes firstly in the context of theology and secondly draw a parallel with Bergson's theory of laughter as a means to self-examination and self-criticism.
My selection from her short stories includes “The Partridge Festival”, “The Life You Save May Be Your Own,” “Good Country People”, "The Enduring Chill" and her novel Wise Blood. |
