Utidjian, Haig. The Music of the Armenian Hymnal: The Tntesean Corpus. Červený Kostelec: Pavel Mervart/Gorgias Press, 2017. 242 s. [Kniha]
This volume involves a comparative analysis of the entire Tntesean corpus, covering aspects of notation (neumatic as well as aneumatic) and performance practice. It juxtaposes transcriptions in Western notation with their counterparts in the Limónčean system, and Tntesean's redactions with the mediaeval neumations. Such considerations, coupled with relations to the system of Ottoman makams, clarify obscurities, and shed light on the manner in which the mediaeval Armenian neumes were interpreted in nineteenth-century Constantinople.

A memorandum of understanding between Mervart and Gorgias Press should ensure simultaneous publication in the Czech Republic and in the United States.

This monograph covers original research carried out by the Principal Investigator (PI) on the theological, musicological and philological aspects of the works of St. Gregory of Narek, with a particular emphasis on his poetry. It includes Czech translations based on texts prepared from a detailed comparison of manuscript sources and earlier editions, and, inter alia, a hitherto unknown melody for one of the odes of the Saint, which the PI himself unearthed during his researches in Istanbul. Though there is an emphasis on the Saint's odes, the volume also embraces other musical genres exounded by the Saint.
The book has been accepted for publication and is to appear later in 2017.

This volume authored and edited by the Principal Investigator in connection with an Exhibtiion he curated at the Czech National Library in the Klementinum, with the choice of exhibits reflecting his own research interests.
Substantial sections are devoted to the textual aspects of the odes of St. Gregory of Narek, the music of the Armenian Hymnal and its neumatological aspects, including hybrid systems entailing interactions of Armenian notational systems with the Middle Byzantine system of neumes employed for notating the music of odes, editiones principes of important works, and detailed descriptions as well as specialised chapters.

The volume was produced in close collaboration with the National Libraries of the Czech Republic and Armenia, and was associated with an Exhibition curated by the author, including early and rare hymnals, ode-books, manuscripts and facsimiles.

We describe the evolution of perceptions of the legacy of St. Gregory of Narek over the second millenium, with the corpus serving as a mirror of the mindsets of the various communities and readerships; the analysis also sheds light on aspects of the corpus itself that laid it open to diverse interpretation. The article discusses the neumatic structure of the earliest two manuscript witnesses for a celebrated ode by the author, and includes a criticism of the manner in which the age and provenance of orally transmitted versions was assessed by Soviet-era musicologists.

The author introduces three early manuscripts of the ode that have not hitherto been studied, and presents unknown components which he recently discovered. These sources manifest a highly sophisticated manner in which ode and hymnal components were seamlessly intertwined, the use of repetition in a musically convincing manner, as well as clues as to liturgical deployment. The author employs various arguments - involving, inter alia, aspects of allegory and theology - to demonstrate the authenticity of the newly-discovered components, calling for a fuller and richer interpretation of the ode. The article is the second part of a projected four-part study, which will include an eclectic version combining elements of the diplomatic transcriptions of the three early sources, as well as a full analysis based on the neumations in these sources, their inter-relationship as well as relationship to those of the hymnal items with which the main body of the ode has been combined.
