What does it mean that the mind is independent from the senses and therefore, immortal? Furthermore, what is the relation between the embodied mind and the body? These are the main points that will be addressed in the course. Our textual base will be a class on psychology that the Jesuit professor Juan Maldonado (Extremadura, 1533 - Rome, 1583) taught in Paris in 1564: this “compendium” provides the modern reader with an excellent synthesis of what Descartes himself, for instance, will oppose to in his Metaphysical Meditations (1641). This text, entitled “On the origin, the nature and the immortality of the soul” (De origine, natura et immortalitate animae), has been recently edited by myself. Students will be provided with an English translation during the course.

This course aims at presenting, through the reading of a 16th century scholastic course, late medieval and early modern doctrines of the immortality of the soul and of human cognition: for the two go together, in the perspective of the scholastic Maldonado. Eventually, students will obtain:

-        a good overall knowledge of the major theses on the soul, from medieval to early modern time (theories on the origin of the soul, the soul as form of the body, the relation between the soul and its faculties)

-        the ability to read an early-modern text and decipher its structure and content (e.g. strategy, sources)

-        an idea of how a scholastic course was held during the 16th century

Participation is strongly recommended, as well as the consultation of moodle, where texts will be regularly uploaded. Students willing to give a 30’ presentation within the course will be provided with texts and themes during the first course meetings. It is strictly recommended to stick to such suggestions; any proposals must anyway be previously discussed with the teacher.

Metody výuky - angličtina
Poslední úprava: Anna Tropia, Ph.D. (06.02.2019)

The course will be structured around the original text by Maldonado, which will provide a guideline through the major problems and history of the doctrines on the soul from antiquity to early modern time. Its order and structure will be approached on a twofold method: historical and analytical. Selected texts from the De origine will offer the opportunity to discuss both sources (e.g. Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, Alexander of Aphrodisias) and Maldonado’s own reading. The assignments will consist in the reading of the text’s chapters before every meeting.
