Course requirements

Course requirements include attendance and class participation, a class presentation, and a final paper.

Attendance and active class participation are required as the course is designed as a seminar. Students are allowed to miss no more than one week. A legitimate explanation must be provided for any further absence. Should a student be unable to deliver her or his scheduled presentation, she or he is requested to inform the instructor well in advance so the course can be rescheduled accordingly. Failure to deliver the assigned presentation will result in failure of the course.

Students are requested to consult with the instructor on the topic of their presentation, which shall correspond to one of the thematic areas covered by the course as listed below (due February 25, 2019). Students are required to submit their presentations/handouts before the scheduled presentation to the particular class lecturer. The presentation should focus on the topic discussed with the lecturer and should consist of short background of the topic, the analysis of the issue and relevant conclusions. The analysis should prevail over description only. The presentation should not exceed 30 mins (even in case of joint presentation). The written summary of the presentation based on comments voiced during the class discussion should be sumbitted to a class lecturer as well as course leader no later than 1 weeks after the presentation. The written presentations should be approximately three to five pages long and contain a list of consulted sources.

The final paper should be 3000-4000 words. It is important that for your final paper you chose a different regional focus from that of your in-class presentation. The paper must be appropriately referenced, contain a list of consulted sources and conform to the standards of academic writing. The papers are to be sent to the respective instructor (due January 31, 2020). The students are requested to discuss the topic of their final papers with the respective instructors.

Both presentation (including presentation summary) and final paper will be evaluated with grade A-E and F (failed). The final grade is the average sum of the two parts with final paper as more decisive factor in case of two different grades.

All submission deadlines for papers are obligatory. Students must pass all assignments in order to pass the course. Papers will be assessed based on the first draft submitted.

There is a zero tolerance in regard to plagiarism. Misconduct will result in failure of the course and further action.

Please make sure you send all your papers in copy to the main course convener (slavomir.horak@post.cz).
