The aim of this subject is to acquaint students with the typical language features of serious media, namely the British daily press and the BBC, and, at the same time, with the selected social and cultural issues presented in them. The presupposed entry level is that of C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The texts and audio recordings will be analysed from the point of view of both language and content. Students will be acquainted with the main principles of preparing and delivering presentations and a minimum of one major presentation will be required to earn credit for the course. Thematically, attention will be focused on demographic developments, the state of the family, multicultural society and ethnic groups in today?s UK.

Předmět sleduje dvojí cíl: seznámit studenty s typickými rysy jazykového vyjadřování v seriózních médiích anglofonních zemí, a zároveň s aktuálními tématy společensko-kulturního dění ve Velké Británii, příp. USA. Předpokládá se vstupní úroveň C1 Společného evropského referenčního rámce pro jazyky. Studuje se žurnalistický styl a aktuální texty se analyzují z hlediska jak jazykového (zejména lexikálního a stylistického, tak obsahového. Studenti jsou seznámeni s hlavními zásadami přípravy a přednesení prezentací a jedna samostatná prezentace je podmínkou k udělení zápočtu. Hlavní tematickou náplní je mnohostranný pohled na současnou britskou, příp. americkou společnost. Podmínky k udělení zápočtu: 80% docházka, ústní 15 min. prezentace, 5 pisemných zadání (na cca 200 slov), závěrečný písemný lexikální test (60% úspěšnost). Pro kurs neexistuje studijní literatura. Zdroje pro prezentace: onlinové verze seriózníéch deníků a týdeníků, např. The Guardian, The Independent, The Economist, The Times, The Daily Telegraph, Guardian Weekly, The Financial Times, International New York Times.
