The course on ?Problems of the Post-Soviet Space? deals with the basic issues and development trends of the successor states to what was referred to as the Soviet Union in the 1990s (excluding the Baltic States). It is an optional course designed for Master?s students specializing in Russian and East European Studies as well as in International Relations. The course is planned for one semester. It consists of twelve sessions taking place once a week according to the syllabus (see below). Each session will focus on one specific issue or country. The first half of the session shall represent a short introduction to the problem, either on the part of the lecturer or on the part of a student assigned an oral presentation. The second half shall consist of a discussion concerning the presentation. Assessment is on a pass/fail basis.
Aim of the course
Last update: HORAKS (26.09.2011)

The course aims at offering a solid overview of developments in the post-Soviet space since 1991. The students will gain general knowledge and understanding of the newly independent states of the former Soviet Union in a wider international context. The students will become familiar particularly with the nations? contemporary history, political and governmental system, and economic, social and ethnic problems. Given the geographical scope and complex inner structure of the post-Soviet space, the work in the seminars will be strongly comparative in its nature, thus enabling the students to advance their analytical skills. More generally, the course will provide the students with the opportunity to develop fundamental critical skills for successful study in reading, writing, research, as well as oral communication.

Requirements to the exam
Last update: SIRJ (25.04.2008)

During the assessment, the student?s participation during the session will be especially taken into account. Regular attendance is required, as the course is partly a seminar. Students are allowed to miss the course three times at most. Those students who do not make an oral presentation will be required to write a paper to pass the course. The paper should contain approximately between 2000-3000 words, should be appropriately referenced, and conform to the standards of academic writing; otherwise, it won?t be accepted. Both the topic and deadline are subject to consultation with and approval of the lecturer. A final written exam will assess the knowledge of the subject matter. Failure to give the oral presentation without an acceptable prior excuse as well as failing the written exam, which can be retaken twice, will result in failure of the course.
