Annotation

The course will introduce the students to the U.S. legal system from a European perspective. Role of law in U.S. society as well as various current issues concerning the U.S. legal system will be discussed. First part of the course will focus more on history and development of U.S. law, the second part will cover specific areas of contemporary law. No previous experience with legal studies necessary for enrollment, the emphasis of the course will be on social and political consequences of legal norms.

The goal of the course is for students to understand the importance as well as relevance of U.S. legal culture for U.S. politics, economy as well as society. After completion of the course, students shall understand the key mechanisms of U.S. legal system as well as its connection to critical debates within U.S. society.

The course is based on the E-U-R method, with evocative news stories leading to understanding of the underlying legal processes and subsequent reflection on the wider context of the given problem.
