Course Description: Using writings from Thomas Jefferson, Henry David Thoreau and Vaclav Havel, we will do a phenomenology of democracy in practice. We will intertwine therein the questions of freedom, both individual and in a democratic society, as well as the question of the responsibility of free citizens in a society. Within this context we will also look at the shared human values that a free democracy entails.
