The Character of Consciousness

The aim of this course is to offer a critical insight into some of the problems of consciousness as they are discussed
in contemporary philosophy of mind. Our course will be centered around David Chalmers's 2010 book The
Character of Consciousness and we will try to understand and philosophically evaluate Chalmers's nonreductive
view of consciousness which can be seen as a critical reaction to various kinds of reductionism that have been
prevalent in the 20th century English-language philosophy of mind. While we will spend some time inspecting the
motivations of the nonreductive approach, we will also look into some of the positive alternatives to materialism,
such as property dualism, dual-aspect monism and panpsychism and try to decide whether any of these deserve
to be taken seriously.

Čtvrtek 19.10-20.45 (225V) – od 24.2 do 24.3. se kurs koná v 19.30-21.00
Seminář je věnován četbě a interpretaci Plótínova pojednání V,1 [10] O třech počátečních hypostasích.
Východiskem četby bude řecký text, znalost řečtiny je tedy vítaná, není však nezbytnou podmínkou účasti na
semináři. Jednotlivé pasáže Plótínova pojednání budou probírány na základě předem připravených pracovních
překladů a referátů účastníků semináře. Kurs navazuje na četbu tohoto pojednání v LS 2010, text proto nebude
čten od začátku, ale od kap. 5. V úvodu nicméně bude podáno shrnutí obsahu kap. 1-4 pro ty, kdo se nezúčastnili
loňské kursu.
Atest je možno získat za vypracování referátu a pracovního překladu nebo seminární práce.
